Dozens of electric cars and plug-in hybrids — including Teslas, Chevrolet Volts and Nissan LEAFs — sparked interest Sunday as the Los Padres Chapter of the Sierra Club celebrated National Drive Electric Week with a car show and test-drive event at Channel Islands Harbor.
James Reach, transportation chair for the Sierra Club chapter, said in a news release announcing the event that the goal of the show was to “teach the public about the benefits, ease and low cost of electric vehicle use and maintenance without dealers boosting their own brands.”
EV owners allowed the curious to test-drive their cars.
Reach said drivers are usually enchanted after a test drive, “delighting in the instant torque that causes smooth, rapid, silent acceleration and short braking distances.”
“Besides the driving experience being far better than any internal combustion engine vehicle, the cost of ownership, fueling and maintenance is sharply lower because there are almost no moving parts to wear out or maintain,” he said. “Also, electricity for fuel is far cheaper than gasoline per mile.”
