The iPhone Xs is finally here, after being unveiled at Apple’s “special” (in its own words) event on 12 September. The successor to 2017’s iPhone X, the Xs represents the highest-end smartphone that the California tech giant has to offer (barring its older brother – the iPhone Xs Max).

I’d love to say that Apple is famed for the affordability of its products, but sadly this could not be further from the truth. The Xs will start at £999 for the 64GB model, rising to a mind-boggling £1,350 for the 512GB version.

It makes sense, then, that you might be willing to spend a little extra money to protect your new toy, especially if you’ve recently re-mortgaged your house in order to afford it.

The best way to protect your phone? Why, with a case, of course! Here’s our lowdown on the best iPhone Xs cases available.

The best iPhone Xs cases you can buy

Spigen Tough Armour: Best heavy-duty iPhone Xs case

Price: £14 | Buy now from Amazon

What’s the key feature that most people look for when shopping for phone cases? Durability. It is the raison d’être of phone cases, after all.

When it comes to durability, almost no-one comes close to Spigen. The company has updated its Tough Armour range (the “longest-standing fan favourite”, according to Spigen) to coincide with the release of iPhone Xs, and the result is excellent. This case’s slim, dual-layered structure allows it to withstand all manner of drops and bumps. If that isn’t enough, the built-in stand allows you to comfortably watch your favourite TV shows anywhere, any time, and it supports wireless charging, too.

At only £14, these features make this case one of the best value on our list.

Key specs – Materials: Polycarbonate, Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU); Drop-proofing: US MIL STD w/ Air Cushion Technology; Warranty: 90-day limited warranty

Mujjo tan leather case: Most stylish iPhone Xs case

Price: £40 | Buy now from Mujjo

Some of us don’t really care about durability, though. This case from Mujjo is a more stylish option for those who want to look good, and have faith in their ability to not drop their brand-new iPhone Xs.

The main headline from Mujjo is that its cases are now made from 100% premium full-grain leather. According to the company, these “work to accentuate rather than conceal the iPhone Xs’s beautiful design.” The leather rises 1mm above the edge of the screen, creating a bezel that shields your screen from abrasive surfaces. It’s a simple but effective look, and we love it.

The cost of this level of luxury? A rather steep £40. And Mujjo only ship worldwide for orders of over £55 – so you’ll have to buy one for a friend, too.

Key specs – Materials: Dual-grain leather, Japanese microfibre; Drop proofing: Not supplied; Warranty: Two-year limited warranty

Griffin Survivor Endurance: Best iPhone Xs case for protection from high drops

Price: £31 | Buy now from Griffin

Griffin’s Survivor Endurance case for iPhone Xs offers high protection with little bulk. The company claims its shock-dampening system “decreases G-force impact by 40% compared to traditional phone case materials”, safeguarding your new handset from ten-foot drops. The pebbled texture along the side of the case also allows for more grip, reducing the chance of your iPhone Xs slipping from your grasp to a dramatic demise.

Griffin doesn’t compromise on design, however. From it’s slim, transparent look you wouldn’t guess that it’s a phone case designed for durability. In our eyes, that makes it a winner.

Key specs – materials: TPU; Drop-proofing: 10ft; Warranty: 1yr limited warranty

Moment Battery Phone Case: Best multifunctional iPhone Xs case

Price: £77 | Buy now from Moment

This is perhaps the coolest phone case we’ve seen all year. Moment specialises in cases aimed at mobile photographers and filmmakers, and this shows in the Battery Phone for iPhone Xs. Its features include an electronic, DSLR-like shutter button, an attached wrist or neck strap (the choice is yours) and additional battery for longer video shooting. Its hard shell and rubber body simultaneously protect your handset from drops – this case is truly multitalented.

The cost of all this? A rather daunting £77. Small change, however, if you fancy yourself as a modern-day Annie Leibovitz.

Key specs – Materials: Polycarbonate (PC), TPU; Drop-proofing: Not supplied; Warranty: 1yr limited warranty

Apple iPhone Xs Leather Folio: Best wallet case for iPhone Xs

Price: £99 | Buy now from Apple

It would be rude not to include a case made by the phone’s actual manufacturer, wouldn’t it? I’m sure a small company like Apple needs our money to get by, so why not help it out by purchasing one of its official phone cases?

Thankfully, Apple is as good at making cases as it is phones. This leather folio for iPhone XS ticks all the boxes. Crafted from tan European leather for a luxurious look and feel, it fits snugly around the Xs handset. Open the case, and your iPhone Xs wakes up. Close it, and it goes to sleep. There’s also space for bank cards and notes on the interior.

The price is admittedly high, but if anyone knows how to make good cases for Apple’s phones, surely it’s Apple itself.

Key specs – Materials: European tan leather; Drop-proofing: Not supplied; Warranty: 6yr limited warranty

Mous Limitless 2.0: The best protective slim case for iPhone Xs

Price: £40 | Buy now from Amazon

Mous prides itself on producing the most durable iPhone cases around, and the company isn’t afraid to tell you about it. Just look at its YouTube channel.

Although the company hasn’t yet dropped an iPhone Xs from space in one of its cases, you can rest assured that their Limitless 2.0 will be a product of high quality. Its Airoshock technology allows it to be super slim while maintaining a high level of protection that will allow you to drop it over and over again. A free screen protector is also included, made of a triple-layered TPU/PC/Silicon blend, so your screen is safe from scratches, too. We also love the choice of authentic materials for each case – whether it’s carbon fibre, bamboo or walnut.

Mous has slashed its prices to coincide with the launch of the iPhone Xs, so make sure you get yours soon.

Key specs – Materials: PC/TPU with walnut/carbon fibre/leather/bamboo/seashell; Drop-proofing: Airoshock shock absorption; Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Olixar carbon-fibre iPhone Xs case: Best value case

Price: £10 | Buy now from Olixar

There are some people who just don’t care about the look or feel of their phone case, so long as it’s cheap. Thankfully, Olixar has got you covered.

Although the company is the king of cheap cases, this UK-based operation doesn’t compromise on quality. This is illustrated by its new carbon-fibre case for iPhone Xs. Extremely thin and light, the carbon-fibre body not only looks great, but will also protect your handset from lumps and bumps along the way. The case also features cutouts for easy access to all the ports on the iPhone Xs, but really not much else. But retailing at only £10, you can’t really complain.

Key specs – Materials: Carbon fibre, TPU; Drop-proofing: Not supplied; Warranty: 2yr limited warranty

Casetify Impact cases: Funkiest iPhone Xs case

Ranging from “Giraffe with Flowers” to “REAL CUTE REAL TOUGH”, the company has a case design to suit your every need. There are numerous floral options, and even an entire custom section perfectly suited to personalised gifts. All Casetify’s products are hand-picked by its editors after being voted for by its community, and it shows.

But it’s not all style over substance, with each case also offering 2x military-grade protection.

Key specs – Materials: qitech material; Drop-proofing: 6.6ft military-grade protection; Warranty: 10-day return period

Proporta Flex Switch Grey Marl case: Best old-school case

Price: £35 | Buy now from Amazon

Our list so far has been a procession of shiny plastic and carbon fibre. For those who prefer a touch of the old-school, I give you the Proporta Flex Switch Grey Marl.

This case is unique in its simplicity. We haven’t seen many others like it, but the aesthetic really works – and it has a high-quality feel to boot. If tweed jackets/cord trousers are your style, this could be the iPhone Xs case to match.

But looks aren’t everything with this product. Inside, you’ll find anti-shock AirWall technology, a built-in kick-stand and a magnetic surface for compatibility with wireless charging and car mounts. You needn’t worry about wear and tear on the fabric, either, because Proporta offers a lifetime exchange warranty.

This is a case that looks as though it’s arrived from the past, but is built for the future.

Key specs – Materials: TPU, TPE gel lining, two-tone Grey Marl; Drop-proofing: AirWall anti-shock technology; Warranty: Lifetime exchange
