Along with headliners like Josh Ritter and Third World, a slightly lesser known band named Amish Internet will be playing Maplewoodstock this weekend. In fact, Amish Internet opens the festival at noon on Saturday, July 14.
But unlike the headliners, Amish Internet is comprised completely of local talent AND that talent will all be housed in Columbia High School this fall. Hudson Pollock (guitar and vocals), Lucas Dalvi (drums), and Marley Striem (bass guitar) will all be freshman at CHS come September. Misha Nicholas (keyboard) is a rising junior.
(Fun facts: 116 bands applied to play Maplewoodstock this year; 11 of the 19 bands selected have local ties.)
Danielle Perrotta recently featured the band on her new SipInSOMA.com podcast. She interviewed three members (Marley was at sleepaway camp). Lucas explained how he and Hudson did not start out as friends but ultimately found they had music in common and formed a band about a year ago. Misha, who is also in the band Israeli Disco, met Hudson through the SOMS Chorus. The band’s first gig was Hudson’s parents’ anniversary party.
What does Amish Internet sound like? For now they are focused on covers — although members do write original music as a part of other projects. Covers include eclectic sounds from The Cars to Arcade Fire. Hudson called the band a “passion project” in which they play “songs that we love and we grew up with.”
“It’s incredibly exciting that I was able to get a VERY LAST-MINUTE interview with an incredible band, Amish Internet!” wrote Perrotta on SipInSOMA.com. “To say that the interview was inspiring and eye-opening is an understatement. If you know anything about me it’s this – talking to young people is an ultimate thrill for me – it was really fascinating to hear their advice for parents on support their kids’ musical ambitions or lack thereof and their excitement at playing the ultimate gig in Maplewood – Maplewoodstock!”
