With Google’s Android P update almost here we want to provide OnePlus owners a look at what to expect when it arrives. This is everything you need to know about OnePlus Android P updates.

Earlier this year Google pushed out an Android P Developer Preview to Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL users, along several other smartphone manufacturers like OnePlus and Sony. The OnePlus 6 is one of the first phones to try the Android P beta.

As a result, OnePlus users eagerly awaiting the official arrival of Android 9.0 P later this fall. And, it’ll arrive faster than past updates too, thanks to participation in the beta program. Google’s Android P update is loaded with new features, smart controls, and more. Features you’ll want as soon as possible.

Popular smartphones from all major manufacturers will get a free update to Android 9.0 P when it’s released in August or September. First, Google will send it out to Nexus and Pixel devices, then manufacturers will begin seeding it to their users also.

OnePlus Android 9.0 P Updates

In early 2017 OnePlus blend the two teams working on Android updates for China and the rest of the world into one group. An effort to bring the latest software and features to all devices at a faster pace. It worked too because the Android 7.0 Nougat and Oreo updates arrived very quick. In fact, they’re now one of the best when it comes to software updates.

We’re expecting that same fast delivery of Android 9.0 Popsicle (that’s our guess for the name) once Google releases it.

The first official OnePlus Android P update will be for the OP6 shortly after Android P debuts. If the beta program is any indication, we could see official software within 30 days of Google’s release. In previous years it took them 3-4 months to deliver updates, which started to arrive around December or January. Basically, don’t be surprised if OnePlus Android P updates don’t start until December, although we’re optimistic that they’ll come much sooner in 2018.

What OnePlus devices will get Android P? Well, more than we expected and here’s an official statement from the company themselves.

“Over the past few months, we have been working closely with Google on the Android P Beta program. Thanks to everyone’s participation and continued feedback, the progress we have made together has been greatly accelerated. The Android P update will be available on the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5/T and OnePlus 3/3T, in this order. We will keep you all updated in the coming months.”

There you have it. First, the Android P update will hit the OnePlus 6, then the 5 and 5T, followed by the older OnePlus 3 and 3T. And by then we’ll probably have a new OnePlus 6T running Android P as well.

Confirmation that the older 3 and 3T will get Android P is really important, and something all owners can appreciate.

OnePlus Android P Beta

If you’re interested in trying Android 9.0 P or new features ahead of everyone else click here to join the open beta. This is only for the OnePlus 6, but we could see devices like the OP5 or OP5T get added later this summer. Keep in mind that this is beta software, so some things might not work 100%.

When Android P gets released we expect OnePlus to add other phones to its own internal beta program within 1-2 months of its arrival. Basically, the wait is almost over.

What’s New in Android P

There are lots of new Android P features that you can use to do more with your phone and tablet. Users will enjoy bundled and smarter notifications, auto-fill improvements, and tons of “smart” features throughout. Not to mention new gesture navigation controls, digital wellbeing options, Google Assistant improvements, themes, and support for the notch. That’s on top of the usual performance and battery life changes.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of everything that’s new so far. Then, we’ve also compared it to Android 8 Oreo for those interested.

One potential bonus is the fact that OnePlus uses a pretty stock Android experience. It isn’t covered with a skin like Samsung or LG, so it should arrive quickly and run smooth. Expect the Oxygen OS update to have a few improvements, bug fixes, and new features specific to OnePlus devices on top of everything else in our link above.

Final Thoughts

Right now, almost every OP phone from the last two years is running Android 8.0 Oreo update or the newer Android 8.1 Oreo release. Within the next six months, most of them will be on Android 9.0 P. Something we won’t be able to say about Samsung, LG, or other big manufacturers.

That said, what exactly we can expect and when exactly they’ll arrive is still a complete mystery. Considering we don’t know when Google will release Android P, we can’t speculate when others like OnePlus will. Having said that, we believe it will arrive in August or early September.

Basically, all the most popular OnePlus phones dating back to the older OnePlus 3 will get Android P in the near future.

In the meantime, if you’re experiencing issues on Oreo, here’s a roundup of some potential fixes. That should help with any major problems that arise. We’ll update as soon as we know more.
